July 2009 - Post 16 funding for pupils with medical needs

This issue was raised at the recent conference and it seems there is a real lack of clarity about who is responsible and where we can access funding for pupils who don’t suddenly stop being ill, just because they reach their 16th birthday!

The Learning Skills Council, in it’s publication ‘LSC Funding Guidance 2008/2009: School Sixth Form Guidance 2008/09 and 2009/10’ has a section on Medically Ill Pupils and eligibility (page 26,27) which is a really useful guideline.
You can download it at:
http://readingroom.lsc.gov.uk/lsc/National/LSC-P-NAT-080189_SchoolSixthFormGuidance.pdf

Looking at the updates for this year, the only part which refers to pupils with SEN is to say that they are reviewing the provision in 2009/10 so we can assume that the guidance still stands.

It took at lot of time for us to track down who in the county council had been given the pot on money to fund these pupils and many have since benefited.  Due to a change in personnel, they have now asked our team to administer this fund so although we cannot teach or support we can at least offer school some real support to provide specialist teachers.
Do contact your LSC person and see what light they can shed on the situation.
Please let me know how you get on, and we can update the website and help other members and other young people in the same situation.
